About a year ago, I stumbled upon a viral Facebook video about a man who bridges the gap between the young men in his community and the elderly. I was impressed beyond measure.
Rodney Smith Jr. is originally from Bermuda. When he came to the US, he discovered that the people living here didn’t share the same sense of community and service that he enjoyed in his home land. He noticed the unkept yards in his neighborhood and decided to take it upon himself to help his neighbors with their yard work, free of charge.
This simple concept has become a story that is shared nationwide via social media. Rodney recruits the young men of Alabama to help him groom the yards of the elderly, the disabled, and single Moms. This service is obviously a big help to the people receiving the free lawn care, but more importantly, it is shaping the young men in his program to become compassionate and responsible members of their community. The very thought of a young teenager having a front porch conversation with someone four times their age is the stuff smiles are made of.
Rodney has been able to turn his passion for social work into an all encompassing community program that changes the lives of the young and the old. When you purchase our “Be the Change” wood sign, you are helping us raise money for this program that will help them purchase the equipment necessary to expand the message of community service.
