“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”
― Washington Irving
"Two years ago I read that poem at my mother’s funeral. She was too young, it was too soon, and there are still no words to describe the loss. I sat by her bedside in the days leading up to her death with the knowledge that my infant son, too tiny to travel the 3000 miles to Baltimore, would never know his grandmother. I needed her a little longer. The truth is, no matter when, I would have always wanted more time.
When it was clear that her time had come we made the painful decision to move her into a hospice care unit. The unit we chose was the same one that had cared for my grandfather 14 years earlier, Stella Maris. Throughout the final days they provided care and comfort to my mother, as well as to the family. Death is never fun. Death is never fair. But when there were no more cures and the was no more fighting, they provided a compassionate and dignified final chapter. The employees and volunteers provide care at the worst times in our lives and deal with families at their hardest moments. At Stella Maris, they meet that concern with kindness and understanding.
In many cases insurance will cover some of the care, or for a limited time. Unfortunately, these things don’t have a time table and there is a need for donations. I am all for finding cures. Please, donate to those as well. But please don’t forget that there are always those that don’t get that cure and they deserve quality care and a peaceful end.
When I met with Meagan to talk about this item I asked for it to be pink and sparkly. My mother was usually in pink, and always wearing something that sparkled. Meagan did more than I could have asked. It reminds me of my mother, her values and the qualities that made her….her. I want you to buy this item because I want to support Stella Maris. I also want you to buy it because we could all use a little piece of my mother in our home."
